This post is mainly for those who have applied and been rejected for the BFA Character Animation Course.  I  wrote to CALARTs asking about any feedback on my application they wrote back saying that I can send an email to the Admissions Counselor for this information.

CALARTs are really busy now so you need to wait until 1st May or after before you send your request.

The person you need to talk to is Jesse Damazo - and his email address is as follows,

I'll post my feedback on this blog.

Hope this helps!!!

See ya soon

Got my rejection letter from CALARTs Boo Who!!!

I didn't get in!! - sob - sob.  #

The problem is, I really don't know where I went wrong :o(.  I'm kicking myself for not applying to Sheridan - at least (I think) they give you some indication of your artistic ability in terms of a grading sheet.

Amazingly, the family has done a u-turn about not wanting me to sell up  everything and go to CALARTs; now they're insisting that I put up a fight for next year.  I suppose that's one good thing to come out of this rejection, that I now have complete backing from my family.

I think the next constructive steps after a rejection are;

1. getting feedback on my portfolio;
2. getting feedback on my sketchbooks and
3. getting feedback on my artist statements.

I'm going to apply to CALARTs for one last time.  I think I might also apply to Sheridans - simply for the valueable feedback form.  If Ringlings offer sometype of feedback form - I might apply to go there as well.

I going to change tactics slightly.  Although the past four months have been an eye opener in terms of life drawing, I really don't want a portfolio to prodominately produce a series of life drawings. I am eager to produce some polished products.

I haven't heard anything yet!!!!

I  haven't heard anything from CALARTs !!!!!   A lot of people have got their acceptance letters already - and there have been speculations that CALARTs are nearing their 60 positions.  It looks like the writing is on the wall, but a part of me can't stop being hopeful.

Mother Sauvage Project - an digital comic book blog

I am currently spending my weekends working on a digital comic.  I am adapting the short story 'Mother Sauvage' by Guy de Maupassant.  I think the first aim is whether I can tell the story visually.  The only way to test and to improve this is to avoid words.

At the moment I am concentrating on the theme about war and revenge.  I really want to get across the message that there are no winners in war, and that revenge killing does not solve anything; in fact it does the opposite and exacerbates things.

Below are a few sketches.

Bellydancing Animation Project - Jimmy complete

I've now updated one of my characters, Jimmy.  I've also decided to give him a splash of colour.  It looks like that I might have to do the entire animation in colour. This is going to take even longer than I had anticipated.

Bellydancing Animation Project - Character Sketches

I am currently creating an animation to promote my Bellydancing Art work.  So far I have drawn the bellydancer dancing, I am still trying to work on the smoothness or the timing of the movement.  At the moment I just want to get the work out there; as there are many other projects that I need to develop.  The aim is, I hope, to improve as I go along, and when I get better to return and reproduce the animation.

I have developed to main characters for the Bellydancing animation, Timmy and Jacob.  I just need to ink my drawings  and perhaps retouch within Photoshop.  I haven't figured out whether I am going to animate both or just the one.

Bellydancing Art Project - Sketches and Test Animation

Bellydancer Sketches

I've begun to create some sketches of a bellydancer.  The idea is to exaggerate the gesture lines and contours thereby heighten the sensuality of the dance.  It's my intention to emphasise the movement of the dancer.  I felt this could be done by observing he detail line drawing of the skirt.

It initially appears to work as an art piece. The next stage will to redo the sketches with much more  emphasis on gesture lines.  I need to tighten up on some details such as the hair, and the inking of the skirt, and perhaps maybe add colour.

A few of my bellydancer sketches can be seen below.

Bellydancing Test Animation

I am also creating an animation to promote the collection.  I've imported some of the sketches as key frames into Adobe Flash Cs6.  First impressions are obviously, the lack of smoothness between the frames, lack of clarity with the line drawings and lack of colour.

I am still unsure about using line drawings within this animation.  I think I am going to try and get at least 2-3 seconds of smooth animation and see how that looks. The goal will be to shoot in 'two's' so one drawing for every two frames.  Therefore I will be requiring at least 36 drawings.  I've already done 10 so another 26 to go!

If the test movement and timing looks fine then I will tighten up on the details and colouring.

See test animatiom below.
