Observational (People)

PART 1, OBSERVATIONAL DRAWINGS

Observing People

Life Drawing Classes:

Attending Life Drawing Classes is a must.  I did it last year, albeit for only three months.  I spent my entire Saturdays drawing and I loved every minute.  The quality of my drawings improved dramatically. This year, I will be starting back next week, and I will be attending on a weekly basis.

How I plan to get the most out of my Life drawing Classes:

Attend quality classes that have a qualified teacher.  I think attending well run classes, that have a qualified teacher is a must.  The feedback given by the teacher is valuable, and can also give  you ideas of how to improve on your work..  Last year, I attended different life drawing classes and I will be doing the same again, as I feel getting different feedback broadens your horizons.

Have a purpose or plan of what you would like to achieve in the classes.  Last year I was just trying to experiment with different mediums, this time I'm more eager to learn about the theory side eg line quality, contrast and applying this to my artwork.  Also I'm going to have more of a feel of what I would like my finished piece look like.

Be more prepared in terms of items: 2 Large Bulldog clips ( These are better holding the paper in place than using masking tape); I will take various textured paper, different colour paper this will give my artwork variation; hand wipes!!!(Especially when I'm using charcoal) ; Affixative for charcoals; Take your sketchbook with you!  You can fill it up with some drawings.

I'm going to be observing a little more closely.  I've noticed that my drawings appear to be too classical, a little too perfect.  Life is not like that and nor are people.  I need to notice the irregularities and incorporate this in my drawings.

Another goal will try and reflect the models relationship with their environment.  I need to feel how   the environment can affect the model's mood.

Lastly, I'll need to improve on the Hands, Face and Feet of the models.

Using Friends and Family:

Talking to other artists in the class, they say that it is best to attend life drawing classes  at least three times a week.  Er .. yeah mate .... if you have the money to do so... then fine... ..For now I am happy to attend at least once a week, the other times I can use family members to pose for me, (with their clothes on of course)

I think one of the benefits of having friends and family pose for you is that you have greater control over how they look  etc.  I'll need to do more research on this, I'll update this post with ideas of poses.

Useful Online Figure Drawing websites:

I usually used this website for practice on a daily basis, mainly for gesture drawings so I could capture a person quickly.  I found then very good, and it's free too.  I did not use any of the drawing for my portfolio.  Most of my drawings were from attending life drawing classes.  The drawings that did not meet my portfolio was added to my sketchbook.

Personal Critisim of my Portfolio:

I think one personal observation could be that I didn't have enough poses that were dynamic nor did I have enough poses that showed frontal poses.  I will need to wait on the feedback to find out whether this is the case.
